Yippee Ki Yay Mother Podcast #1: Birdman, or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

I would like to announce the the birth of the Yippee Ki Yay Mother Podcast.

The podcast is the brainchild of ace editor Ralph Quattrucci. I met Ralph while working for a certain cable network. Ralph served as my priest/confessor during my tenure. I spent at least the first twenty minutes of every day in his suite discussing the more arcane points of their ever-changing standard operating procedures. We also discussed movies. Mainly movies from the 1970s that we found very influential.

Ralph and I were both dismayed that many of the younger folk we worked with hadn't seen any of the classic films we grew up with. I'm not talking about arcane films like The Conversation, Taxi Driver or A Clockwork Orange. Most of these young 20-something producers haven't even seen major blockbusters like Raiders of the Lost Ark and E.T., The Extraterrestrial. Ralph always wanted to do a podcast about 70's films, but, after the young lions Hassan and Al (Just Al) expressed interest, he decided to make it a multi-generational examination of the movies instead. Hopefully, they will learn something from us older guys, and hopefully we will learn something from them.

Here's how it works. Every month each of us picks a movie for the others to watch. Then we get together and record all four resulting podcasts in one afternoon. The person who picked the film has to defend it from the others. Sometimes we agree. Sometimes we disagree. In the future, we will feature some special guests as well as filmmakers who want to come and present their films to our multi-generational firing squad.

Appearing on this podcast is big departure for me. Let me explain why. Once upon a time, early in my career, a producer friend asked me what I thought of the film Timecop starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. I told her I thought it sucked. Then producer said, "Well, the producer of that film wants to read your script." Needless to say, my opinion of Timecop quickly changed. I suddenly remembered many things I liked about it. As a result of that embarrassing incident, I have avoided publicly criticizing films by people I could potentially find myself working with. For example, I have reviewed hundreds of films on the IMDB, but never under my own name. I have three personas. One gives capsule reviews of films in all genres. Another one gives lengthy, more thoughtful, reviews of serious films. My final persona only reviews straight-to-DVD horror films. I will sticking my neck out on this podcast. Hopefully it won't cost me any work!

I hope you enjoy the postcast.
