ChatGPT makes $hit up!

I have been testing ChatGPT's Open AI program with simple tasks like writing loglines and I have been impressed. I initially became interested in the program after a professional writer friend of mine told me he was using a different AI program, Jasper, to write blogs for his clients on various subjects. Was artificial intelligence going to render us writers irrelevant? I decided to give Open AI a more difficult task to find out. I asked it to write my biography for a blog.  Here are the results. I will embolden things it found itself and got right, and italicize things it got wrong.

Before I go any further, I want to say I am not famous. However, I am a public figure. Google me and you will find page after page of information -- more than I would probably like you to know! I have written a couple of books and a number of movies, all of which have been reviewed by critics and consumers. There's a lot about me on the internet. This should not be a difficult task....

Here's my initial request:  "Write me a blog about the work of author and screenwriter Sean Paul Murphy."

1st Attempt, 1st Request:

Sean Paul Murphy is a talented author and screenwriter who has made significant contributions to the world of literature and film. With his unique style and compelling stories, he has captured the attention of readers and viewers around the world. Whether he is writing a novel or a screenplay, his work is always thought-provoking and emotionally resonant. As he continues to create new and exciting stories, we can't wait to see what he has in store for us next.

Okay, that was strange. There was no screenwriting Sean Murphy who wrote on all of those television shows. When it came to the books, a Sean Murphy did write a book called "The Time of New Weather," but, as best I can make out, those other books simply do not exist. That said, I thought there was something warm and homely about my non-existent small town Ohio upbringing. I decided to give a program a second shot.

As he continues to produce new works, it is clear that Murphy’s legacy as a talented storyteller will only continue to grow.

I liked that biography better. It made me much more impressive. However, once again, the AI is simply making stuff up. I could understand if there was another Sean Murphy writing for "The Twilight Zone" and movies like "Chaos Theory" and "The Lost City," but there isn't one. That's all BS. Also, although my work has won Emmys, I never won one myself personally.

Okay, okay. I decided to become more specific. I changed my request to: "Write me a blog about "Sean Paul Murphy," the author of the books "Chapel Street" and "The Promise, or the Pros and Cons of Talking with God," and the screenwriter of films like "21 Eyes," "Sarah's Choice," "The Encounter" and "Revelation Road.""

Some improvements. It realized "21 Eyes" was about surveillance cameras, and that I taught screenwriting, but a lot of the material still seemed to come out of thin air. I decided to re-focus the program.

Once again, the program lucks into some accurate points that I didn't feed it, but it still makes up some outrageous BS. I decided to hone my question further with the hope that the more information I gave it, the more accurate the result would be.

A new request: "Write me a blog about Baltimore-born and Towson University educated "Sean Paul Murphy," the author of the 2020 horror novel "Chapel Street" and his 2014 memoir "The Promise, or the Pros and Cons of Talking with God," and the screenwriter of films like "21 Eyes," "Sarah's Choice," "The Encounter" and "Revelation Road.""

Closer but still no cigar. I liked the journalism angle. I originally majored in journalism, but switched to film. I never really worked as a journalist!

After this test, I'm not concerned about being replaced by artificial intelligence. That might happen someday, but I don't think it's going to be happening anytime soon.

And I certainly wouldn't want to create blogs for paying clients using data from ChatGPT!
