Grave Tales #13: Suvilla Elizabeth Braverman

I am an avid genealogist. The past is very important to me. I spend a lot of time in cemeteries photographing tombstones to upload on the website FindAGrave.

I enjoy recognizing long dead people by putting memorials to them online. However, every once and a while something grabs me about a specific grave. It could be the name, or the dates or a ceramic photo. In those cases, I feel compelled to dig a little deeper. That's what this series of blogs is about: The tales behind those graves. Some of my subjects will be heroes. Some will be villains. Some will be victims. And some will linger in between, like most of us. However, don't be surprised if the tales are inherently tragic. These are grave tales. They all end in death.

One of the unexpected byproducts of the COVID 19 Pandemic was ZOOM church. This was an innovation my wife Deborah and I couldn't enjoy from our home because of ongoing remodeling. We had to find a nice quiet place to attend church via cellphone. The place we chose was Saint Stanislaus Cemetery in Dundalk. Trust me, sermons resonate more deeply when heard in a cemetery, especially ones from the Book of Ecclesiastes about the vanity of life. It turned out to be a fortuitous location, because that's where I found Suvilla Elizabeth Braverman.

When I walk by a grave, I hope to find something that allows me to connect with the deceased. That can be very difficult when most of the time you only get a name and the dates of birth and death. I don't know whether this tombstone was designed by the deceased herself or her family, but it made it very easy for me to feel a connection to her.  Here's what it said on the front, under a smiling picture:

SURVILLA ELIZABETH
BRAVERMAN
nee FORD
ARTIST, MUSICIAN, POET,
MOM
MAY 15, 1943
JUNE 15, 2015
"A Faithful Witness"

Wow. That really gave me a sense of who she was and what was important to her. The rear of the monument was the icing on the cake: One of her poems:

Amazing Baltimore

Once again the city's crowned with glory;
Through silv'ry-pewter billowing of white
An oval slit of sunshine breaks before me
Returning rainsoaked pavement's paths of light

How does the sun and shadow find your center
To pour its silver rays upon your crest?
How do my feet know just the time enter
To find with what bright riches I am blessed?

And what to say of paradox endings
As daylight fades and evening has begun
With darkness overtakes the shadowed blendings
To hide a rising city's setting sun?

A zillion creatures close their eyes in dreaming
A zillion more awaken, night lights streaming

-Suvilla Braverman

Wow. What a wonderful poem about my beloved hometown. I was anxious to get home and research her further. I was hoping to find more poems, but I was disappointed. I found nothing meaningful about her when I googled her. But what more did I need? I think the monument did an excellent job of capturing her spirit.

This is a perfect tombstone.

Remember, there is a story behind every grave. You never know what you're missing when you walk past one....

My novel Chapel Street is now available! You can buy the Kindle and paperback at Amazon and the Nook, paperback and hardcover at Barnes & NobleChapel Street is the tale of a young man battling a demonic entity that has driven members of his family to suicide for generations. It was inspired by an actual haunting.
