THE STRUGGLE released!

My latest album The Struggle is now available streaming everywhere.

The Struggle follows the loose concept of marriage(s) and relationship(s) on the brink. It is strongly reminiscent of my second album Breakup City, but from a more mature viewpoint. It's much easier to break up with a partner when you're in your teens or early twenties. It's much more difficult to end a relationship after you've spent decades together and your lives have been intertwined by bonds of marriage, family, finances and memory.

I was inspired to create this album as a result of problems in my own relationship. For the first twenty years my marriage was nothing short of idyllic. It exceeded my idealistic expectations. However, we hit a rough spot that was supercharged by the traumatic death of our beautiful eight-year-old granddaughter Emma Renee Schwalm. A majority of marriages collapse after the sudden death of a  child, and it seemed our marriage was on that path. Fortunately, we managed to right ourselves as a result of prayer, soul-searching, counseling and our deep reserve of love.

Unlike the bulk of my previous albums, the majority of these songs have been recently composed. However, some of the songs date to other relationships where I experienced the same range of emotions. The album does end happily, like my own marriage.

I hope you enjoy the album.

Here are the tracks:

1).  NOW EVEN NOW.  I wrote this song to my wife during a particularly troubled period to express my continued longing despite our problems. I texted the song to her while she was at the pool with the grandkids. She angrily wrote back: "Why did you send me a song about (Name Withheld)?" That was a real wake-up call for me. That my wife could confuse a song I had written for her with a song I might have written for my elusive farm girl during that breakup was a sign of how far apart we had grown. However, the mistake shouldn't have been surprising. I was experiencing the same sense of hopelessness and longing that I did at that time....

2).  MY HEART MY LOVE MY ALL.  This song is, in a sense, the mirror opposite of the previous song. This song was initially based on a poem I had written to my elusive farm girl back in the 1990s. However, when I converted it into a song, it became very much about my wife and myself. It's about the helplessness one feels when you want the relationship more than your partner. You can't want it enough for the both of you. It takes two.

3).  THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. This song is not about any of my relationships. A friend of mine expressed her concerns about her marriage and I turned it into this song. I think it is the best song on the album. I believe the lyrics are strong, and it was one of my best Udio executions. If I had access to a studio filled with great session musicians and singers, I don't think I would have come up with anything better.

4).  WHEN TWO BECOME ONE.  Okay, this song is about sex on the surface level, but it is really about the power of touch. I am a great believer in touch. They say a picture says a thousand words. A simple touch can do the same thing. In all of my relationships, I've discovered that if my partner and I are touching we're still alive and growing. When we stop touching, things grow cold.

5). IMPENETRABLE. Emotions can become overwhelming. With all the hardship coming down on her, my wife was advised to set up firm boundaries, which she tried to turn into an impenetrable wall to protect herself. I believe walling yourself off is a short-term solution at best. Personally, I prefer to go the other way....  For example, expressing my feelings through a bunch of highly personal songs.

6). WALKING THROUGH A MINEFIELD. I doubt that there isn't a married person who can't identify with this song. There's nothing worse than being afraid to speak because you have no idea what will set your spouse off. I really love this song. I think it could be a hit if it were recorded by a country artist.

7). STILL I BELIEVE.  Romantically, I am an idealist. I want to believe in my partner. I want to believe in love. That's what this song is about: Continuing to believe despite being in a relationship where the actions don't always match the words. Yes, still I believe.....

8).  WHY I LOVE YOU.  An old girlfriend of mine once asked me why I loved her. In a moment of self-doubt, she wondered why anyone would give a sh$t about her. I wrote this song in response.

9). I DON'T FEEL THE SAME WAY ANYMORE.  This song is based on something my wife told me during one of our down moments. She said she loved me. She forgave me. But she didn't feel the same way anymore. When I played this song for her later, she reassured me that she no longer felt the same way about me that she had felt about me when she said that. Good!

10). THE RISING OF THE SUN. I wanted to write some extremely personal songs for this album and what could be more personal than writing about losing my "innocence," as it were. I thought that moment would be the beginning of even greater emotional intimacy, but instead it proved to be the harbinger of the end of our relationship. This is another one of my favorite songs on the album.

11).  YOU'RE GONE NOW. This is the oldest song on the album, harkening back to my breakup with my first girlfriend. Even then, I was still reaching out. I am always willing to stand by commitments I made. I've always had a hard time closing my heart to someone I loved. That's my curse.

12). A LOVER WITHOUT LOVE.  With this song, from my elusive farm girl period, I try to answer the question: What's a lover without love to do? I didn't have the answer at the time, but it ultimately proved to be attend swing dances until you find Deborah Crum.

13).  DO YOU REMEMBER? One of the difficulties in ending a long term relationship is the reservoir of memories. The good times can linger forever in the heart. That's what this song is about. Another favorite of mine.

14).  NOW EVEN NOW (REPRISE). This track is a second take on the opening song from a female perspective with an altered melody and lyrics. It is a more optimistic take. I thought it would make a good album closer, but, as my personal situation improved, I decided to add a few more upbeat songs.

15). CANVAS OF DREAMS. This is an alternate take of the 2nd song from my first album The Elusive Farm Girl. I wrote it the night before our first meeting after a long internet flirtation. I didn't use this take because I thought a male voice worked better in the context of that album. However, I feel the cautious but genuine optimism of this take works wonderfully here.

16). LOVE 2.0. The good thing about marital difficulties is that they can lead to growth and greater intimacy if you survive them. That's what this song is about. I feel my wife and I have both changed for the better.

17). NAKED TIME! I don't have a cure-all for ailing marriages and relationships, but it certainly helps to have a wife who is known to come home after a hard day's work and shout: "It's naked time!" I, for one, find it hard to be grumpy during naked time.

YKY REUNION(S): JAWS/THE NIGHT STALKER

The Yippee Ki Yay Mother Podcast of old is no more. It has morphed into two separate podcasts.  Founder Ralph Quattrucci has recreated Yippee Ki Yay Mother Podcast in a new format -- featuring person face-to-face with two people, usually his wife and himself, called The Cinematic Lounge. Meanwhile, Ralph's brother John Quattrucci has created a new podcast called John Talks Indian Cinema, continuing our former emphasis on Indian films. We, the other regulars, have found ourselves adrift.

John invited some of us regulars, Wojo, Brad, Drew, my wife Debbie and myself, and Drew's wife Kelly, back to discuss the film Jaws. Ralph had previously forbidden us to review Jaws in our previous incarnation because he didn't think we collectively had anything new to add to criticism of the film. I'll let you be the judge. I don't know whether we added anything new, but we certainly enjoyed ourselves.

John had broken the episode into a number of parts including this discussion of our favorite lines from the film:

And also our Halloween recommends:

I always had an open invitation to reappear with Ralph on the mothership. I couldn't resist and brought one of my favorite films of all time: the made-for-TV film The Night Stalker, which inspired the influential but uneven series of the same name. It was a fun discussion. Check it out.

Be sure to follow both podcasts.

I wonder if a full reunion would be in the offing if we decided to finally tackle Die Hard....

MANY FACES OF LOVE released!

Many Faces of Love is a departure for me.

The songs on all of my previous albums have been very personal. Nearly all of them were inspired by actual people I knew or my own experiences. Many Faces of Love is a creative exercise.

I've heard that unknown performers (or my case, songwriters) have to find a niche to break out on streaming platforms like Spotify. I was particularly intrigued by a very prolific songwriter who found his niche writing songs about poop. Apparently songs about poop are very popular. This songwriter later started writing songs about cities all around the country. He found his niche(s) and now makes hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

I'm not trying to make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on Spotify. Hundreds would be enough for me. However, I did think about carving a little niche for myself. I wasn't going to write about poop. I could, but poop isn't my cup of tea. Instead, I decided it might be fun to write songs about the most popular girl's names in the country. Hence this album.

Am I selling out? No. To sell out, someone would have to be buying and I don't expect that. However, I don't think I truly became a professional screenwriter until I started writing on assignment. I view these songs as a writing assignment.

When I write a screenplay on assignment, I always have to find something emotionally true to myself in the story. It's the same way here. On this album I tell fourteen stories built around fourteen names. While the characters are fictional, these are all stories I could find myself in. In fact, I would say that some of these songs are pretty true to my own experiences, but discretion prevents me from saying which ones.

I hope you enjoy the album.

Here are the tracks:

1).  ISABELLA, MY SWEET CHICKERELLA. Okay, I love the story of this song about a man meeting the love of his life, but the track is an in-joke. A friend of my mother-in-law used the word chickerella to describe a certain intimate part of her body. I couldn't resist. It rhymed too easily with Isabella.

2).  SHY AMELIA.  I view this New Wavey dance tune to be a call for all women named Amelia to free themselves of societal constraints and let their freak flags fly. I hope an Amelia somewhere out there appreciates it.

3).  MY LOVE, OLIVIA.  I tried to invoke classic, late sixties Southern soul with this ode of love to woman named Olivia. So far I've liked every woman I met named Olivia. Hopefully all of the Olivias out there will feel the same way about my song.

4).  SOPHIA.  Sophia gets the yacht rock treatment on this track.  It's about a heartbroken guy who takes a chance with the titular woman. This is one of my favorite songs on the album.

5). AVA'S DANCE. I tried to use a variety of musical genres on this album. This one has an R&B dance vibe. It's about a guy who meets an alluring woman on the dance floor of a club.

6).  CHARLOTTE'S EYES. I take another voyage on the yacht with this love song about a woman with alluring eyes. Another one of my favorites.

7). SCARLETT'S SPELL. I often wondered how I would have fared if I wrote a nineties-style boy band song. This track is the answer. It's about a young man who finds himself the emotional prisoner of an older and more sexually experienced woman. Talk about the story of my life!

8). ARIA, TAKE A CHANCE.  I encouraged heartbroken Aria to take a chance on the singer -- who is currently stuck in the friendzone -- in this house style dance number. That's a situation I am very familiar with!

9). MADISON, GIRL, WE'VE GOT YOUR BACK. I didn't like the idea of putting out another album strictly from a male perspective, so I wrote a song about a group of girls rallying around their heartbroken friend.

10).  CHLOE, MY CHLOE. This is another R&B flavored song with a man singing the praises of the titular woman.

11). ENCHANTING AURORA.  I return to the yacht club for this paean to the enchanting Aurora. Personally, I've never met a girl named Aurora, but I wouldn't mind meeting this one.

12).  PENELOPE'S OFFICE. Ever have one of those office flirtation/friendships? I certainly have. That's what this friendzone drama is all about.

13).  ELLIE, WON'T YOU PLEASE? I take yet another trip to the friendzone in this sixties-styled song about a man attempting to woo a heartbroken female friend. I hope it works out better for the singer than my attempts did for me.

14). CAMMY, SWEET CAMMY.  In this New Wave dance drama, a man grows too close to an alluring married woman. That happens to the best of us, though not always to New Wave music. (Funny. I didn't like New Wave music back when it was popular, but I really like it now.)

TouchPoint Press Going Out of Business

I have been a proud member of the TouchPoint Press family for nearly ten years since the publication of my memoir The Promise, or the Pros and Cons of Talking with God. I was one of the first authors they published. The company was small and very friendly, and appeared to be on the up and up. As it grew, I really enjoyed the Facebook author's group which allowed me to bond with my fellow authors. It was a great support group.

Many of those authors are now extremely unhappy with TTP and its owner Sheri Williams, and I sympathize with them completely. Contracts and obligations have not been met. Monies have not been paid. Still, I will always be thankful that Sheri took a chance on my strange little memoir. I appreciate her belief in me. I wish her success in her future endeavors.

I wish the same for my fellow authors. The rights for our books are being reverted back to us. Soon readers will not be able to buy the existing books on Amazon or other websites anymore, which means I will have to revise all the blogs here that link to them. I will probably self-publish my memoir, but I might try to find a new publisher for Chapel Street. I will also try to find a publisher for Life-Like, my next novel which was already in the pipeline for publication.

I view my time with TouchPoint Press positively. I met a lot of great authors and editors. I wish them well.

If you want a copy of one of my books, you better get it quick:

HE SAID SHE SAID released!

My new album He Said She Said has just been released.  It is available streaming everywhere.

My last two albums, Tales of Love and Death and Many Sides of Love, were simply collections of songs. This album is more concept driven, like my first two albums The Elusive Farm Girl and Breakup City. This album is a series of mini song suites, each about a different significant relationship in my life in chronological order. The biggest difference between this album and the previous ones is that I attempt to incorporate the words and thoughts of my former girlfriends into the narrative.

I've always been a pack rat. If you wrote me something, I can pretty much guarantee I have it stored somewhere around this house. A number of songs on this album were inspired by something one of my former girlfriends wrote or said to me. That's why I called the album He Said She Said. Don't worry. I don't let myself off too easy. My heart gets broken quite a few times over the course of this album, but it has a happy ending with me meeting my wife and, supposedly, putting the past behind me.

This is my most personal album to date. I don't know how anyone else will respond to it, but it chokes me up in places. Not the sad moments. I relived them far too often already. It's the happy memories that get to me. They make me remember what I lost....

Then again, if I didn't lose what I had, would I have gained what I have?

Here's the song list:

1). CELEBRATE US. This song was based on a letter my first girlfriend Kathy sent me from college on our third anniversary. We were very happy as a couple at the time. There's a lot of joy in this song.

2). 156 MILES TO YOU. This is an answering song to Celebrate Us. Kathy was the subject of my second album Breakup City. That album was very bleak.  I don't think it expressed anything positive about our relationship. I believe this song captures some of the joy and excitement I felt during our time together.

3).  YOU HOLD THE KEY. When I first told Kathy I loved her, she wasn't prepared to reciprocate. She said she only wanted to say those words to her husband. However, a few days later, she sent me a card which I encapsulated in the chorus of this song. The rest of the song is drawn from things she wrote to me when she went away to college leading up to our breakup. I had already released this song on YouTube and it proved to be one of my most popular ones.

4). TIME CAN'T TAKE IT AWAY. This is my answering song to the our breakup. I recognized that Kathy's feelings had changed, but that didn't affect how I felt about our time together. I still look back on our relationship fondly. She changed my life, and she was there when I needed her most.

5).  MOUNTAINTOP. This song is based on one of the first poems I wrote to my elusive farm girl. Before we met, we spent a long time getting to know each other through emails, instant messages and phone calls. Things seemed to be going so well that I feared we had nowhere to go but down....

6). BEFORE THE MOON GOES DOWN. The chorus of this song is based on the personal ad my elusive farm girl posted on America Online that initially attracted my attention. The verses capture her perspective on our relationship based on her emails. This is one of my favorite songs.

7). THE WHITE KNIGHT. This song is my retrospective look back at my relationship with the elusive farm girl. This was my woman whisperer phase, where I believed I could solve any woman's emotional problems with a direct application of love. I was wrong, of course, but I don't regret trying! At the very least, I ended up with a wonderful and wise friend.

8). OUR SECRET LOVE. During one of my long breaks with the farm girl, I met a sweet, flirtatious girl online who I will call Tammy. There was only one problem with our relationship: Tammy was married. I still thought it was emotionally safe to flirt with her. Afterall, I lived in Maryland and she lived in Florida. What was the chance we'd get involved? I didn't think we'd fall in love, but that's where we found ourselves. This song was inspired by an email she sent me as we considered our dilemma.

9). ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT. This song was not written specifically about Tammy, but I feel it captures the lustful yearnings she inspired in me. I was going to write a song about her lustful thoughts toward me, but I couldn't figure out how to capture them in a song without being too explicit.

10). WINDSWEPT MEMORIES. This was the decisive moment in my relationship with Tammy. She flew to Baltimore so I could take her to Ocean City for a wintery weekend vacation. This song was drawn from an email revealing her expectations and other emails about the actual aftermath. Would we cross the line? Listen and find out.

11). A FRIEND, YES FOREVER. This song was based on the last poem I wrote Tammy before we finally drifted apart after she met the lucky man who would become her second husband. Fortunately, thanks to social media, our friendship has been renewed. She has always been a very kind and sweet woman to me. I will always be grateful for the moral support she gave me when my sister Laura died, and the support she gave me recently when my granddaughter Emma died. God bless you, Tammy.

12). THE FRIDAY NIGHT SWING DANCE. Finally, after all the heartbreak, a happy ending. This song describes how I met my wife Deborah at the Friday Night Swing Dance at the Tall Cedars Hall. What a great night!

13). I'M HERE TO STAY.  At first, my wife wanted to be friends only, but, as she was leaving the car after our first date, I asked her to stay for a second so I could give her a kiss. After that kiss, there was no more talking about being friends. I sang this song to my wife at our wedding.

14). FADED VERSE. The lyrics to this song tell the whole story. I found a poem I wrote to my first girlfriend in one of my college notebooks. I originally wanted to turn the poem into a song, but the theme was inconsistent and the sentiment was too maudlin. Therefore, I only used part of the poem for the chorus. The rest of the song is about finding the poem and how it affected me.

Be sure to check out my novel Chapel Street. It tells the story of a young man straddling the line between sanity and madness while battling a demonic entity that has driven his family members to suicide for generations. It was inspired by an actual haunting my family experienced.
